United States of America: Leadership & Management of Humanitarian Action 4

Country: United States of America
Organization: Institute of International Humanitarian Affairs
Registration deadline: 11 Jul 2016
Starting date: 25 Jul 2016
Ending date: 29 Jul 2016

Course Description:

Despite humanitarian agencies' not-for-profit status, they must be managed and administered on sound business principles. Humanitarian action at country or “field” level presents significant challenges to leaders and managers: the concealed nature of many stakeholders’ priorities; the need to function in rapidly assembled teams comprised of individuals from diverse cultural and professional backgrounds; the need for strategic planning and communication in a rapidly changing, complex and often insecure context. In this course, students will learn the managerial methods and skills required to become senior managers and directors of humanitarian organizations. Within these roles, such individuals need to work with and manage skilled specialists in various fields. This course educates students on the issues confronting humanitarian actors in leadership roles during times of crises (including cultural differences, gender, security, and emerging economies) and supplies participants with tools to deal with issues as they arise.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to distinguish and identify characteristics of good leadership and management in humanitarian action, giving examples of each with reference to case studies from the field. Students will learn the tools for successful management within the humanitarian context, including the use of needs assessments, mechanisms for accountability, strategic visioning and thinking, and extensive knowledge of the principles governing the dynamics of leadership and fellowship.

Cost:

For students choosing to take this course for academic credit, there is a course fee of $1,600 USD. Upon successful completion of the program participants are entitled to two academic credits through Fordham University's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. These credits are accepted towards our Master of Arts in International Humanitarian Action. For those who do not wish to receive formal academic credit, the cost has been reduced to $913 USD. Participants will receive a certificate of attendance for the program but will receive no formal academic recognition..
