United States of America: Masters in International Humanitarian Affairs

The Institute of International Humanitarian Affairs (IIHA) and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) at Fordham University have joined together to offer a comprehensive Master’s program that combines the experience of long-time humanitarian professionals with the academic strength of Fordham faculty. The MIHA consists of Four Modules, 8 credits each, which together total 32 credits. Courses are offered in one and four week intensive sessions in various locations around the world, including Barcelona, Geneva, Goa, Nairobi, Dublin, Rome, Penang and New York. Students can complete the program in as little as 18 months or as long as five years, depending on individual schedules and resources.

The First Module of the MIHA is the International Diploma in Humanitarian Assistance (IDHA). The IDHA is an intensive four-week program that provides instruction in subjects covering the wide spectrum of humanitarian assistance. Students interested in pursuing the MIHA degree must complete the IDHA before continuing on to the other modules.

The Second Module of the MIHA is the International Diploma in Operational Humanitarian Assistance (IDOHA). The IDOHA is designed to deepen the understanding of humanitarian operations and explore theoretical and practical implications of the evolving humanitarian institutional environment. This module consists of three required one-week courses: Humanitarian Logistics; Community Participation in Emergency Response; and Humanitarian Negotiation, in addition to one week long elective.

The Third Module of the MIHA is the International Diploma in the Management of Humanitarian Action (IDMHA). The IDMHA is designed to provide students with practical management skills, the understanding of institutional relationships and coordination, and a framework for understanding the ethical issues that arise in humanitarian action. This module consists of three required one-week courses: Managing Humanitarian Organizations; Institutional Coordination and Cooperation; and Ethics of Humanitarian Assistance, in addition to one week long elective.

The Fourth Module of the MIHA is the International Diploma in Humanitarian Leadership (IDHL). With course contributions from high-level representatives in a variety of relevant disciplines, students gain an understanding of the history of humanitarian affairs and the strategic initiatives needed to improve the analysis, mitigation, response and delivery for the future of humanitarian assistance. This module consists of two one-week courses and a thesis course: Disaster Management Training Course; Strategic Issues in Humanitarian Affairs; and MA Thesis Research I and II.

All MIHA courses can be taken as stand alone courses apart from the Master’s program, either for academic credit or for no credit. The total cost of the program is $26,800 and does not include transportation costs to and from the classes. Limited scholarships are available.

Registration will require a resume, official transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate institutions attended, three letters of recommendation, and a statement of interest. There is a $35 dollar application fee.
